What We Offer

Patient Services

How Treatment Works

All psychotherapy, whether group or individual, involves talking about your difficulties and your worries. At first, this may feel painful, but over time, it helps you feel better.

Our service offers either virtual or face to face treatment – this is something you will discuss with your allocated therapist. We usually find, however, that face to face is more helpful and so that is always our first recommendation for treatment.

Whether you enter a psychotherapy treatment, a group treatment or a more intensive psychoanalysis we invite you to take the treatment seriously. The more you commit to the process the more you will benefit from the process. It is important to attend every session if possible and to keep in touch with your therapist or analyst should there be any difficulties around attending.

Therapy Options

Individual Therapy

We offer a once weekly individual therapy treatment for a two year period.

Individual therapy involves meeting your therapist weekly to talk about your struggles and difficulties and also simply to talk about where you are in your life. Your therapist will guide you in the process and help you to find your way to share your difficulties and the reasons for your coming into therapy.

It is often daunting to talk about your past, or issues that have caused you pain, but we would like to assure you that speaking to a professional can be profound. Therapy can help you to relieve your suffering. It can also help you to find strengths and abilities that you have inside you but you never knew about.

The reason our treatment programme is for two years is because we understand that therapy takes a while to “work” and although two years sounds daunting you will find that it is in reality, a rather short period of time.

You will meet your therapist either face to face or virtually via Zoom or WhatsApp.

You can be referred to the JHB Clinic by either your healthcare professional or therapist filling out a Patient Referral Form. Alternatively you can refer yourself by filling out our Self Referral Form.

Once a referral form has been submitted, the JHB Clinic will consider your case. If your case is suitable to the services we can offer, we will then send you a detailed questionnaire which we ask you to complete and return to us as soon as possible.

We want to make treatment accessible to all, based on what individual patients can afford. We use a sliding scale for our fees, charging between R800 – R2000 per month. We are, however, open to negotiating our fees with each individual person based on what is affordable.

Group Therapy

Therapy can also be very valuable in a group setting.

The JHB Clinic offers psychotherapy groups which run for a minimum period of two years with one or two facilitators who run the group.

Group psychotherapy offers you a chance to meet with the same group members weekly. Often you will find that a group member speaks “your feelings” or “your story” when you are not yet able to do that. Group members also support and comfort each other and provide a space for you to gain confidence and self-belief through engaging with other people.

A particularly important part of group work is helping you gain trust to share your story with others. As daunting as this sounds it is a very powerful and healing experience to “share” in a group and the group bonds very deeply in a way that allows for real growth and development.

We also offer Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) groups. The DBT groups are shorter term (typically six months of weekly group sessions). They offer a teaching aspect to the therapy where you learn about how to regulate your emotions and to manage your distress in a way that does not negatively impact your relationships.

We also offer short and longer-term tailored groups for specific populations such as nurses’ support groups, trauma groups and women’s and men’s groups.

Most of our groups are conducted face to face at our Clinic, but some of the groups will be online. If you are interested in joining a group, you will be informed which ones are on offer.

If you are interested in joining one of our groups, fill out our Self Referral Form and a member of our clinic will be in touch with you with more information. If you would like to refer a patient for group therapy, please fill out a Patient Referral Form. Our standard group therapy rate is between R400 and R1600 per month for 4 weekly sessions. Payment structures are, however, always flexible and can be discussed between you and the Clinic.

Referral Forms

Healthcare workers can also refer patients using the Patient Referral form.

You can refer yourself to the Clinic by completing the confidential Self Referral form.

Once you have filled in this Referral Form, a member of the JHB Clinic will be in touch with you. You will then be asked to complete and return another, more detailed questionnaire.

In the more detailed questionnaire you’ll be asked what you can afford — and what treatment you are most interested in.
Waiting lists can be long but our hope is to place you as soon as possible.
